Introduction to Guru Gobind Singh Ji 52 Hukam Series

In the year 1708, Sahib Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji (10th Sikh Guru) was resting with The Khalsa in Nanded, the city where Takht Sri Hazur Sahib currently stands. At this time, Guru Sahib was coming close to physically leaving this Earth and transendencing to The Divine. As such, Guru Sahib directed 52 Hukams (commands) to the Sangat (Holy congregation) in order to leave Sikhs with a practical manner in which to live their daily lives. In amongst the congregation was Baba Raam Koer (a Sikh of The Guru and the direct lineage of Baba Buddha Sahib Ji) who scribed everything that Guru Ji was saying.

In a complicated world full of constant trade offs between integrity and dishonesty, truth and falsehood, oneness and duality, Guru Sahib has given us direct and simple edicts which can guide our life to peace and true happiness. The Guru promises us a life clear of anxiety and darkness by immersing ourselves in Wahegurus Pavitar Charan Saran (sanctuary of The Almighty Lords holy feet).

Whoever submits to His Command, finds peace; His Command is above the heads of kings and emperors.
(Guru Amar Das Ji, Ang 1055)

Since Sahib Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jis parkash (coming upon earth) The Gurus action and discourse has been one of enlightenment, revolution and piousness. Guru Gobind Singh  Sahib Ji's 52 Hukams also follow the same fashion. Arguably, following these Hukams can bring peace to the mind, body and soul therefore not following these Hukams can deprive one of this peace.

As everyone has their own autonomy, no one is obliged to live life in accordance to 'instructions'. But why would we not want to follow something that is not only universally righteous but provides individuals with supreme moral ethics? Lest we forget which Guru gave us these commands; the warrior of warriors, the poet of poets, the musician of musicians, the artist of artists, the general of generals but most importantly the Father of Fathers.

You only need to look at Sikh humanitarian organisations across the world to see how morally driven The Sikh faith is. The respected Sikh faith in the UK/worldwide can be accredited to the strength, dedication and devotion The Sikhs have to their Gurus Hukams. Every Sikh has a duty to practice and protect such Hukams. Moreover, following the Hukam of The Guru who sacrificed wealth, family and blood for us to call ourselves a Sikh is surely the least we can do, as Sikhs, to continue The Guru's message.

The Panjva Takht blogspot will be doing a weekly post on these Hukams with relative information that aims to help readers understand why Guru Sahib gives us certain instructions, the benefits we recieve from following such instructions and most importantly, the relevant ways in which these instructions can be implemented in our daily lives. Make sure to stay tuned so that we can take steps towards our Guru!

A disciple who walks one step towards Guru to take his refuge and goes to him with devotion and humility, Guru advances to receive him (devotee) by taking million steps.
(Bhai Gurdas Ji, Vaar 111)
